Building Excellence from the Ground Up: The Grade School at St. Peter’s College of Ormoc, Inc.
The Grade School of the Basic Education Department (BED) at St. Peter’s College of Ormoc, Inc. (SPCO) represents a century-old tradition of academic distinction and spiritual growth. As part of Leyte’s oldest Catholic school, the Grade School program is designed to nurture young learners into “inner-directed, responsive, and responsible members of society.”
Recently transitioning to the management of the Archdiocese of Palo in 2024, the Grade School continues to uphold its prestigious PAASCU Level II Accreditation, ensuring a standard of education that is validated by national excellence.
A Curriculum for the 21st Century
SPC’s Grade School curriculum is meticulously structured to balance core academic competencies with Christian formation. The program is divided into two key phases to meet the developmental needs of growing children:
- Primary Years (Grades 1 to 3): Students engage in fundamental subjects including Christian Living Education (CLE), English, Filipino, and Mathematics. Grade 1 and 2 students take Makabansa/Makabayan and Computer studies, while Grade 3 introduces Science to the academic load.
- Intermediate Years (Grades 4 to 6): The curriculum expands to include Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) and specialized instruction in Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH), alongside advanced Mathematics and Science.
In line with its institutional goal, SPC synchronizes this instruction with global standards to produce graduates who are “agents of sustainable progress and witnesses of Christian Faith.”
Holistic Formation and Values
Education at SPC goes beyond the classroom, rooted in the Benedictine spirit of “Ora et Labora” (Pray and Work), humility, Christian charity, and reverence for God.
A unique feature of the BED is the Deportment Policy, where students are graded on behavior, industry, and honesty. This ensures that every “SPCian” develops a mature sense of Christian responsibility and a “reverence for God, for all people, and His creation.”
Vibrant Student Life and Leadership
SPC encourages its young learners to lead through service. The Supreme Pupil Government (SPG) serves as the official representative body for the elementary studentry, assisting the administration in implementing school activities and promoting student welfare.
Furthermore, students can explore their unique talents through a variety of Clubs and Organizations:
- Grades 1-3: Focus on foundational interests such as the Young Mathematicians’ Club, Young Artists’ Club, and Young Readers’ and Writers’ Club.
- Grades 4-6: Offer specialized options including Basketball and Volleyball Clubs, Earth Savers’ Club, Junior Go-Negosyo Club, and the Liturgical Club.
A Modern and Safe Learning Environment
Grade School students have access to world-class facilities designed to enhance their learning experience, including:
- Advanced Laboratories: Science, Computer, Robotics Room, and Speech Laboratories.
- Support Services: A fully staffed Medical-Dental Clinic, the Student Assistance Center (SAC) for guidance, and an extensive Library.
- Safety First: The school strictly implements a Child Protection Policy and Anti-Bullying Policy to maintain a “secure and caring environment” where every child is protected and valued.
